This summer marks one year since we officially launched Algee, our small but mighty seaweed company born out of the South West. It’s been a wild, rewarding, and slightly salty ride, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved, learned, and what lies ahead. From Kitchen Experiments to Coastal Kitchens Algee started as an idea rooted in the belief that seaweed isn’t just good for you, it’s good for the planet too. With backgrounds in marine biology, sustainability, and design, we set out to reframe how people think about seaweed, not as a novelty ingredient, but as a staple, a flavour booster, and a genuine superfood. In just twelve months, we’ve gone from testing kelp flakes in our own kitchens to seeing them used in restaurants, sprinkled on eggs, baked into breads, shaken into cocktails, and even churned into ice cream. Umami. Nutrition. No Compromises. At the heart of everything we do is the idea of elevation. Our flakes and powders are designed to be simple, everyday additions that enhance food with natural umami, boost nutrition with essential minerals like iodine and magnesium, and help shift eating habits towards more sustainable choices. This year, we: Launched our first two products: organic kelp flakes and powder. Got our first retail listing Took part in some amazing events and festival. Partnered with incredible chefs to showcase just how versatile seaweed can be. Had our first seaweed bacon rolls, seaweed cocktails, and seaweed treacle tarts. Built relationships with harvesters and producers across the UK to strengthen our supply chain. Donated 100% of our Black Friday sales to Surfers Against Sewage. Shared our story in a short brand film celebrating flavour, sustainability, and the ocean. What's Next? We're still small. Still learning. Still very much in our early stages. But the mission remains the same: to bring seaweed back to the modern menu. To help people cook with it, eat it, love it. To prove that food can be good for you and good for the planet.
